The internet is constantly developing. Right now, it is somewhere between what it was in the beginning and what it will become someday.
In the beginning, the internet was a remnant of the Cold War, a network of computers created for military defense communication that was freed up to be used for other purposes. At first, there were mostly academic postings by universities who had access to the system. The network was opened up to private subscribers in larger cities via phone lines. As telephone companies began offering internet access, the public availability increased dramatically and the web did reach around the world.
But the term world wide is a misnomer because width can describe one aspect of a rectangle or cube but not a circle or sphere and therefore, not the world. Likewise, linking Dallas,Texas to Sidney,Australia doesn't do much for those in Creed,Colorado or Pointe Laree,Madagascar. The Earth cannot be covered with a single strand of wire.
Yet, the internet is reaching more remote areas day by day. It must have reached your area if you are reading this text. Now, what can you do with it? Not only is the internet expanding its reach, but also its functionality.
